Counseling & Support Services
Why is this so hard?
I should be able to figure this out.
If anyone knew about this…
Life. It might be circumstances that overwhelm us, past traumas and difficulties that just keep coming up, or even our own expectations of ourself… so many things can make life difficult. And painful.
As an overall philosophy, I believe the best about people and our efforts to cope with life. I believe we do the best we can in our given circumstances. Many times, small changes in the way we think or behave can have an incredible impact on our lives. Sometimes more in-depth work is needed, patterns are more deeply engrained or healing from past wounds is needed as we find ways to live into the best version of ourselves. My experience as a therapist, educator, and clinical supervisor has helped me to develop a variety of treatment approaches to work with diverse clients and presenting issues.
Ultimately, I help individuals and families find ways to work smarter rather than harder – freeing themselves up to focus on doing the things that bring hope and meaning to their lives.
I intentionally create a space where all people will be respected and honored, regardless of worldview, cultural background, faith/spirituality, or past experiences. I consider the space created in counseling to be a sacred space where inclusion and embrace are foundational.
Sometimes this work is more clinical in nature - formal therapy that addresses diagnosable disorders or more intense clinical situations. Other times this work takes on the form of consultation, helping people find hope and meaning when the difficulties are not causing as significant distress in their lives.
It takes courage to reach out and ask for help. You’ll be glad you did.
Clinical Therapy/Counseling
Clinical Therapy/Counseling is a specific health care relationship between a provider (me) and a client/patient (you). While being a professional relationship, it is still a deeply personal relationship, so it is critical you find someone that is a good fit for you and what you need. Below are a few areas of specialization I bring to the counseling relationship.
-
Trauma takes on so many forms, and has so many different expressions and implications for daily life. My past trauma work has included services to military and first-responder, religious and moral trauma experienced by leaders as faith community members, and the multiple ways families and life circumstances can impact any of us.
I have been trained in EMDR (here is a brief brochure), and focus both on treating the individual as well as supporting those in relationship with the one who has experienced trauma.
-
Couple relationships are difficult to sustain over time. We change, our partner changes, and life throws things at us that we need to figure out how to respond to individually as well as couple. Whatever the stressor, sometimes it is good to seek help navigating our relationship and how we are responding to one another.
-
There is nothing quite like family to be able to be the most supportive and caring place… and at the same time, nothing more damaging and hurtful than family wounds and difficulties. Whether it be related to parenting, care-giving for loved ones, intergenerational relationships, or managing transitions in family life - I am specifically trained to support families through these times.
-
All of the above areas of specialty, along with providing counseling in other areas, can be provided online in a virtual setting. It is not about being better or worse than in-person; instead, it is simply a different setting to do the same type of work - with a unique set of advantages and challenges. Specifically, virtual services often provide more flexibility in scheduling and reduced time commitment by removing the need to travel to a counseling office.
I have been trained specifically in the provision of virtual services (I am a Board Certified Telemental Health Provider), and provide this option to all clients.
Clinical Supervision
I provide post-graduate as well as current graduate internship clinical supervision. I am licensed within the state of Tennessee, and am an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) as well as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor.
-
Meeting individually with me, or with one other supervised in triadic supervision. In the state of Tennessee, at least 50% of your supervision hours need to be in this format.
-
Group supervision can consist of up to eight supervisees, and is offered on a monthly basis in four-hour group meetings.
-
I am available for peer consultation for situations when we have difficulty discerning how to go forward in a case or situation. Areas of specialization include ethical decision making, family and multiple relationship dilemmas, and professional integration of religiosity and worldview into counseling.
Consultation
At times, the clinical nature of the professional counseling relationship is not needed. Instead, consultation can be provided and support what you are experiencing in life. Below are a few areas I have served individually and for groups as a consultant.
-
For individuals, families, or communities who are navigating the intersection of religious identity and sexual identity. When these areas align, there is so much hope for what might be. But when they are in conflict or seen as incompatible, it can create intense distress within an individual and in our closest relationships.
When that distress, individually or relationally, does not rise to the level of clinical therapy services, consultation is a great way to find a safe setting within which to seek guidance, wrestle with personal convictions, and approach others with integrity and confidence.
-
Relationship consultations are helpful in both becoming more self-aware as well as more interpersonally aware.
What might you do to become more aware of your ‘self’ - how you manage your emotions so that you can respond to others from a grounded and confident stance that maintains your integrity?
What might you do to become more aware of others and your environment - how can you cultivate curiosity, or the ability to allow others to be different and distinct without pushing them away, or ways to set appropriate boundaries in your relationships?
Perhaps consultation in this area could be one piece of that process.
-
Often religion and spirituality are an incredibly valuable resource for our mental health and the relationships in our lives.
But at times, these two areas of our life - our faith and our lived human experience - just collide and we have difficulty resolving them without feeling we need to choose. Sometimes, our faith communities can become the most harsh voices in our lives, causing harm and prompting shame and fear.
I seek to walk alongside those along this journey. When the distress and difficulties do not create clinical levels of distress, consultation is helpful in having someone who can guide and offer options and reflection on our experiences.
-
It is possible to hold strong opinions and beliefs about what is good and right and true, yet still maintain genuine community and relationships with those we disagree with. Unfortunately, we don’t have many examples or models showing us how to do this.
I provide individual and relational consultation in situations when there is difficulty in maintaining important relationships amid differences. While there may not be a simplistic formula for how to do this, there are ways to approach and engage others who are different while maintaining your integrity. In fact, it may even deepen your personal convictions as well as your relationship intimacy, if you are willing to do the hard work.

Spiritual Direction is also known as Spiritual Friendship, Companionship, Guidance. In some religious traditions it is well known, in many it is a relationship that very little is ever taught or modeled. I have attached a brochure here to provide more information and background.
I have been trained by the Shalem Institute, and have practiced as a Spiritual Director since 2014. My desire as a Director is to come alongside others as they grow in their awareness and attentiveness to the presence of the Divine in their daily life. I have found that this journey enhances all areas of our lives.
